Lots of the old blues guys used only their fingers–Hubert Sumlin in particular. Albert Collins played with his fingers, and no one ever had a sharper-sounding attack.
Chet Atkins was a fingerstyle player, and I don’t think that he ever used thumb or finger picks.
I’ve seen a bunch who switch from fingers to picks, tucking their picks in their palms.
Knopfler has a great tone here. I read that his is a plain top. I’m pretty sure those were ’58s. Wouldn’t that be nice to have?
I would be nice to have Daniel π Honestly I had no idea there were other players that used this style. Check this one out he sounds real good in this one – https://joeinfocus.wordpress.com/2014/06/18/sultans-of-swing/
Have a great weekend Daniel π
Knopfler uses an interesting right-hand style of thumb and finger picking on that Les Paul. I noticed that on the Money For Nothing video you posted yesterday, as well.
You’re correct Timothy its strange to see a person playing an electric guitar with a pinch style finger picking rather than with a pick. You must play guitar if you noticed that. Have a great day π
Yes I play guitar. Although, I haven’t really played much in the past several years. Because of a shoulder injury in 2006, and surgery in 2007 to correct it, I couldn’t play for a year. I got out of the habit of practicing, got into other things and never got back into playing.
Same here I pick it up once in a while then get back into my other interests (except for the shoulder injury). I kind of figured you played because most people wouldn’t have noticed Mark’s playing style π

I don’t know if Mark’s style is unique but it is very unusual. I can’t do it even a little bit.
